ANTHONY MCCARTY MASTER CRAFTSMAN
BIO

I found my calling in my early twenties. I was immediately captivated by glass—its structure and its demanding precision. Cutting it, I learned, is a delicate dance; you must respect the material, or it will draw blood. This profound connection led me to an apprenticeship at a world-renowned stained glass studio in Shoreditch, East London, a period that fueled my lifelong passion.

Four decades later, that passion remains the engine of my life. My mastery is defined by pushing creative boundaries, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design to create pieces that are both timeless and forward-thinking. I bring a solution-driven approach and meticulous attention to detail to every execution. Driven by my all-consuming love for glass, design, and technique, I continue to create innovative art. My creativity is accelerating, and honestly, I couldn't be more grateful to be doing what I love.

1. Big Ben
I was commissioned to undertake critical restoration work on the four iconic clock faces of Big Ben, focusing on the replacement of damaged and missing white opalescent glass minute markers.

While most dial glass work is completed internally, the specifics of this project required a unique approach: abseiling directly onto the exterior of the clock faces.

This two-week assignment, which began with overcoming a personal challenge—my first abseiling experience—culminated in the successful, high-confidence completion of the work. Navigating the sweeping dial hands while performing intricate repairs gave me a unique perspective, reminiscent of an urban Spider-Man.

Upon completion, the project garnered unexpected attention, resulting in coverage in the Evening Standard newspaper.

2. Natural History Museum
I was honoured to receive the commission to create two bespoke central stained-glass windows for the Natural History Museum. The core objective was architectural preservation, demanding the meticulous replication of the surrounding original pieces.

My work ensured seamless integration by precisely matching the historic design layout, glass colour, and texture, preserving the Museum's iconic integrity and aesthetic coherence.

3. Lightwell, Hotel Café Royal
I’m incredibly proud of the work I delivered for the lightwell at @hotelcaferoyal. I handcrafted over a thousand copper and glass screens that now span four floors of this historic London landmark. It was a true privilege to be involved in a project of this scale and heritage.

4. Private Residence, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
I’ve always had a deep love for stained glass. This installation in Riyadh, sitting on a stunning stained glass dome, was a particularly meaningful project for me. Working alongside John to bring it to life was an incredible experience — a reflection of my history, my craft, and how much this work means to me.
